Converter for hydroden generator

The power converter of a hydrogen electrolyser is a device used in water electrolysis systems to produce hydrogen. Electrolysis is a process that requires a direct current (DC) supply. The converter can be powered by the three-phase alternating current (AC) grid or by a green energy source such as solar or wind power, supplying direct current (DC).

The role of the converter is therefore to generate the direct current (DC) that powers the electrolyser.

The development of an autonomous, transportable hydrogen production station powered by an electrical energy source required the design and manufacture of a power converter dedicated to the architecture of the electrolyser.

Hydrogen refueling infrastructures are developing very slowly, and a self-contained, transportable solution will help to kick-start the process of deploying green hydrogen as a zero-emission fuel. The flexibility of the EFS teams has enabled us to validate an initial piece of equipment that corresponds to the customer’s definition of hydrogen production.

Customer problem

A company that designs small, self-contained, transportable hydrogen stations has asked us to develop a device to demonstrate the feasibility of generating hydrogen from green energy sources such as wind or solar.

EFS response

EFS is designing the complete electrolyser management system, consisting of the following parts:

  • A 100kW electrical power generator, with an AC/DC 400V three-phase to 1000Vdc rectifier as input, and a DC/DC 1000Vdc to 100Vdc/1000 Adc converter as output
  • A distribution cabinet, in addition to the power generator, which integrates the protection and management of the compressors and the water treatment circuit.

Our contribution to the ecological transition has guided the design of the product, with a direct 1000 Vdc input, for use with green energy produced by wind or solar farms.
